Life only concerns itself with making copies. That is, Natural Selection always maximizes the gene. But sometimes errors occur in reproductive copies; errors by way of genetic mutation. Those errors lead to variations within a population, which subsequently extend further out towards the evolutionary boundaries we share with other closely and non-closely related species of various degrees.
All living organisms share a universal genetic library. Together, we are linked through a long series of divergent events that span countless lineages back to one common ancestor; one root on a tree. This tree of life is then revealed to us by our understanding of biological evolution, modern genetics, and computational phylogenetics.
